SME Global Small Parcel Market Report: Q3 2020

October 2, 2020

Globally, e-commerce continues to drive small parcel volumes, intensified by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result, Spend Management Experts estimates the global small parcel market increased by 19% for the first half of 2020. However, the increase has come at a cost to shippers as leading small parcel providers, FedEx, DHL, and UPS have increased surcharges on cross-border express services to mitigate demand. In addition, FedEx and UPS have also implemented Ground surcharges in the U.S as well as holiday peak season surcharges.

The rest of the world, however, typically does not experience such domestic ground surcharges because of a larger number of small parcel providers available within Asia, Europe, and the Emerging Markets. Still, logistics costs are rising around the world to manage small parcel volumes. Small parcel providers continue to introduce lockers, third-party pick-up locations, and more to mitigate costs while retailers introduce curbside pickups, buy online, and pick up in stores (BOPIS) to reduce their shipping costs.

E-commerce growth will likely remain strong into 2021 which will result in higher small parcel volumes. Shippers will need to plan their small parcel strategies carefully in order to ensure adequate capacity at reasonable rates.
